My son. My daughter.
And you will spread out over us a blanket of peace.Last Friday night our kids sang this song in Hebrew as part of another beautiful and spirited Shabbat evening at Camp Tevya. I am still glowing from the warm feeling that swept the dining hall as our campers, arm-in-arm, sang this song. As I looked around the room, I couldn’t decide if I should laugh or cry, so I did both! I have never felt more proud or more fortunate to be a part of this incredible camp community. As I told the campers, the only thing wrong with this past Sabbat, the final Shabbat of the first session, is that it came much too quickly.
The final Shabbat service of the first session was led by or Big and Little Brothers and Sisters. I greatly enjoyed watching our oldest campers guiding our youngest campers through the prayers, truly giving a new meaning to Dor L’Dor, from generation to generation, at camp.
During Friday night’s Rikud, Israeli dance, my breath was taken away for the second time in just a few hours. Upon walking into the Pavilion, Heidi, our Director of Jewish Life and Learning, called me to stand with her on a riser and just look at the beautiful site unfolding. Watching our campers dancing with such joy and enthusiasm, I was once again reminded of the reasons we send our kids to Jewish overnight camp.
I already miss our first session campers; however, I can think about the words they sang each Shabbat and know that camp has given them wings of independence and roots of community. Your children, our campers, are truly a blessing, and I thank you for sharing them with me this summer.
With Tevya Spirit,
Mindee
