Let’s talk
Camp Tevya, a Cohen Camp, is a nonprofit. We do not receive operating support from any Federation, synagogue or other agency. We appreciate and thank each donor on the Sustainability Fund Honor Roll and annual Cohen Camps Honor Roll.
Jewish camping is the best predictor of observance and community engagement as an adult. Adults who were campers are 50% more likely to join a synagogue, 90% more likely to join a JCC, twice as likely to contribute to a Federation, and 25% more likely to marry and raise children as Jews. Alumni from 1965-2006 may recall that the organization was called the “Eli & Bessie Cohen Foundation.” This was never an endowment for the camps. In fact, it was the opposite. During those years, camp tuition generated funds which were then donated to support Jewish organizations in the US and Israel.
Since 2004, all operating surpluses get reinvested in the camp experience at Pembroke, Tel Noar, and Tevya. Changing the name to “The Cohen Camps” in 2006 reflected this switch.
As independent, non-denominational camps, The Cohen Camps receive no funding from Boston’s CJP or other Federations, nor funding from synagogues or movements. The camps are entirely-self supported through tuition. The generosity of donors makes possible critical efforts, including the camps’ Scholarship Funds—which serve 1 in 4 campers—and any major improvements to facilities.
